Walid El Alaoui

I lead the regulatory filing platforms behind UPS’s cross-border shipping.

About a million shipments a day, in 200 countries, run through the platforms I own. Before this role, I led a 40-country operating-model change that delivered $50M in realized annual savings.

Based in New York. Open to Director of Product and Group Product Manager roles.

  • United Arab Emirates
  • Mexico

Outcomes

Results from platforms and programs I owned or led at UPS, one of the world’s largest logistics networks.

  • $50MRealized annual operating savings from a centralized cross-border data capture model rolled out across 40 countries, 2,000 facilities and 4,000 users.
  • ~1MShipments a day processed by the regulatory filing platforms I own, used by 20,000 people in operations.
  • ~40%Of 800K weekly manual corrections eliminated, with an OCR-enabled roadmap targeting 75% automation.
  • $3.5MAnnual payroll saved by prioritizing enhancements that cut operational staffing needs 30%.
  • $2.2MReduction in customs fines, supported by monitoring that lowered package handling errors 7%.
  • 15%Fewer international service delays through better data accuracy, cutting customer claims by about $1M.

Selected work

Three programs that show how I operate: find the costliest manual work, design the system that removes it, and get regulatory, engineering and operations teams to ship it together.

Automating 800,000 manual shipment corrections a week

Lead Product Manager, Global Data Capture & Validation

~40% of the workload eliminated, with a roadmap to 75%.

$3.5M a year in payroll saved.

The problem

Every week, operations teams were correcting about 800,000 international shipments by hand so their regulatory filings would be accurate. The cost scaled directly with volume.

What I did

  • Built the automation strategy for the correction workload and shipped the first wave of initiatives.
  • Prioritized platform enhancements by return, which cut operational staffing needs 30%.
  • Set an OCR-enabled roadmap that takes automation from ~40% to a 75% target.

Centralizing cross-border data capture across 40 countries

Project Manager, International Automation & Centralization

$50M in realized annual operating savings.

Scaled to ~80% of international shipment volume.

The problem

Package inspection for international shipments was labor-intensive and spread across physical operations in thousands of facilities.

What I did

  • Redesigned the model so facilities flag only the shipments that need intervention, and data corrections route to centralized teams in India and the Philippines.
  • Designed rules-based exception workflows with dynamic prioritization driven by shipment events, export schedules and customer criticality.
  • Directed rollout sequencing, operational redesign and change management across 2,000 facilities and 4,000 users, managing a team of 5 and coordinating 20–30 engineers.
  • Used shipment data to remove unnecessary imaging requirements, cutting imaging hardware 30% and saving $800K.

Also

Service delays on international shipments fell 15%, and customer claims dropped by about $1M.

Delivering mandated filing changes in five jurisdictions

Lead Product Manager, Global Data Capture & Validation

Handling errors down 7%.

Contributed to a $2.2M reduction in customs fines.

The problem

Governments in the U.S., Canada, the EU, the UAE and Mexico kept changing what must be filed for cross-border shipments, on deadlines UPS doesn’t set, while the network still had to run efficiently.

What I did

  • Lead 3–4 engineering teams alongside regulatory affairs, brokerage and operations to ship each mandated change.
  • Own backlog trade-offs across engineering investment, regulatory exposure, service risk and ROI, and present the business cases to senior leadership.
  • Stood up operational monitoring and accountability capabilities so errors are caught and owned before they become fines.

How I work

Product judgment backed by enough technical depth to know what the system can actually do.

Bet on the highest-return work

I make roadmap calls with the numbers in view: staffing cost, regulatory exposure, service risk and engineering effort, weighed in a business case leadership can act on.

Understand the system underneath

I write SQL, read the rules engine and trace the event flow myself. It lets me find automation others miss and have precise conversations with engineers.

Get every team on one plan

Regulatory, engineering and operations teams want different things. My job is to align them on the bet and then make sure it ships.

Experience
